Protect Your Plants from the Weather
Protect plants from frost, protect plants from freezing, how to protect
your plants from frost
Ventilation
A thermostatically controlled ventilation system automatically protects
your plants from extreme heat. The system turns on at the pre-set temperature
you select. The fan flushes out warm air and a motorized shutter takes
in the new, cooler air outside, stabilising the internal temperature according
to the season. This system eliminates your daily chore of manually opening
and closing vents. You can either build your own system from parts or
get a complete unit from us. Caution: Entirely cooling a green house by
using only a fan system is not possible. Shading is also necessary. Misting
systems and evaporative coolers can also be used for extra lowering of
temperature.
Shading
Shading is done to protect the plants in your greenhouse from excessive
sun. Depending on your location, this may be between 9 am and 5 pm or
until 7 PM if there is a lot of western exposure. Shading requirements
are based on the weather in your area, the way the greenhouse has been
laid out, and the amount of light needed for your plants. It is important
that the shading covers the roof and at least half the higher part of
the south wall. Beware of too much shading as it will stunt the growth
of the plants or make plants skew in the direction of the light, according
to the principles of phototropism.
Misting
Evaporation of moisture plays an important role in maintaining a suitable
temperature for your plants in the greenhouse. When water changes from
a liquid to a gaseous state, evaporating water effectively absorbs the
excessive heat and stops the temperature in the greenhouse from getting
too high. This is called misting. Good ventilation, with plenty of air
coming in, and shading also help to maintain an optimum temperature inside
the greenhouse. The quantity of water content in the air required is based
on the weather and climate scenario in your area, and available ventilation
and shading.
